Effective Medium Theory for Acoustic Waves in Bubbly Fluids near Minnaert Resonant Frequency

چکیده
We derive an effective medium theory for acoustic wave propagation in bubbly fluid near Minnaert resonant frequency. We start with a multiple scattering formulation of the scattering problem of an incident wave by a large number of identical small bubbles in a homogeneous fluid. Under certain conditions on the configuration of the bubbles, we justify the point interaction approximation and establish an effective medium theory for the bubbly fluid as the number of bubbles tends to infinity. The convergence rate is also derived. As a consequence, we show that near and below the Minnaert resonant frequency, the obtained effective media can have a high refractive index, which is the reason for the super-focusing experiment observed in [17]. Moreover, our results indicate that the obtained effective medium can be dissipative above the Minnaert resonant frequency, while at that frequency, effective medium theory does not hold. Our theory sheds light on the mechanism of the extraordinary wave properties of metamaterials, which include bubbly fluid as an example, near resonant frequencies. Two-Dimensional Numerical Simulations of Ultrasound in Liquids with Gas Bubble Agglomerates: Examples of Bubbly-Liquid-Type Acoustic Metamaterials (BLAMMs)
This work deals with a theoretical analysis about the possibility of using linear and nonlinear acoustic properties to modify ultrasound by adding gas bubbles of determined sizes in a liquid. We use a two-dimensional numerical model to evaluate the effect that one and several monodisperse bubble populations confined in restricted areas of a liquid have on ultrasound by calculating their nonline...
متن کاملImprovement of acoustic theory of ultrasonic waves in dilute bubbly liquids.
The theory of the acoustics of dilute bubbly liquids is reviewed, and the dispersion relation is modified by including the effect of liquid compressibility on the natural frequency of the bubbles. The modified theory is shown to more accurately predict the trend in measured attenuation of ultrasonic waves. The model limitations associated with such high-frequency waves are discussed.
متن کاملSound–ultrasound interaction in bubbly fluids: Theory and possible applications
The interaction between sound and ultrasound waves in a weakly compressible viscous liquid with gas bubbles is considered. Using the method of multiple scales oneand two-dimensional nonlinear interaction equations are derived. The degeneracy of the interaction is found in bubbly fluids. This phenomenon lies in the fact that the interaction coefficients vanish at a certain frequency of ultrasoun...
متن کاملAcoustic Waves in Bubbly Soft Media
There exists a special class of solid media called soft media (or weakly compressible media), for which the inequality ┣>>┤ is satisfied (┣ and ┤ are the Lamé coefficients) [1-6]. Such media with very small shear stiffness are dynamically similar to liquids to a great extent and exhibit strongly a “water-like” characteristic and, therefore, are also associated with the name of “water-like” medi...
متن کاملEffect of direct bubble-bubble interactions on linear-wave propagation in bubbly liquids.
We study the influence of bubble-bubble interactions on the propagation of linear acoustic waves in bubbly liquids. Using the full model proposed by Fuster and Colonius [J. Fluid Mech. 688, 253 (2011)], numerical simulations reveal that direct bubble-bubble interactions have an appreciable effect for frequencies above the natural resonance frequency of the average size bubble. Based on the new ...
